October Meet Up

We are delighted to announce our next meeting will take place on Wednesday 12th October, 7-9pm at the newly opened Websters Bar and Bistro in the West End, really handy for Kelvinbridge Underground and great bus links too!
We just simply couldn’t ignore the fact this is the last year of The Great British Bake Off as we all know & love it with Mary, Mel & Sue, so our theme will the RIP GBBO (sob!)!
Bring along a bake inspired by The Bake Off and join us to enjoy cake, tea and great chat (mostly about GBBO I’m predicting!).
Email with your name & bake, bring a box to take home some left overs and we’ll look forward to seeing you!

Ready, Steady, Go! Sports Themed August Meet Up

Delighted to announce our next meeting will be on Wednesday 31st August 7-9pm at Dram Glasgow on Woodlands Road and our theme inspired by the Olympic Games will be sports!
If the weather turns out to be surprisingly warm & sunny we will head to Kelvingrove Park to enjoy our bakes in the open air, picnic blankets & flasks of tea at the ready! We’ll post updates on the week of the event to confirm plans depending on the weather forecast!
If you would like to join us, all you need to do is email with your name & bake and bring along any sweet or savoury bake (with a sporting theme is purely a bonus!).
We look forward to seeing you then!

Bread, Pastries & Francoise Magic

IMG_1068Our latest meeting of the baking club took place at a Byres Road institution, Patisserie Francois, which was very appropriate as the theme for this meeting was bread and pastries. The perfect time to dust off the bread books and demonstrate your Paul Hollywood-style skills! Francoise herself was on hand to share some of her knowledge and experience with us, and give us a few comments on our offerings as well. Kind of like a French Mary Berry! She told us about how she got started in the baking business and how she came to run the cafe which has been a part of the Byres Road scene for so long. She had some fascinating stories to tell including baking cakes for the Queen Mum, Charles and Diana, and Elton John himself! Although Francoise admitted she had no idea who he was and had to ask a friend if he was some kind of local celebrity….

The theme this week gave everyone a good opportunity to try something new, and we were hoping it would encourage a few more savoury bakes as we are always in need of some salt to offset all the sugar we usually consume at a typical baking club meet up!

The range of bakes on offer was as amazing as ever, and luckily there was a good mix of the sweet and savoury. There was some beautiful foccacia for starters, along with some lovely soda bread and cheese, mini pretzels and sausage rolls. That set us up nicely for the selection of sweet bakes, which were also very tempting. We had some beautiful raspberry and lemon profiteroles, mini fruit tartlets, banana and chocolate brioche, not to mention scones , almond fruit tart, bread and butter pudding and chocolate oat bars. After all that I think it is safe to say we were stuffed, but still managed to take a good selection of cakes home with us for the next day, when we finally felt hungry again! We welcomed a few new faces this week and they impressed us with their amazing baking skills, so we really hope they join us for the next meeting!

We decided that with the upcoming European referendum the theme for our next meeting would be European bakes, which throws up a lot of different options so get your thinking caps on and your German baking books out of the cupboard! The next club meeting will actually take place on the day of the referendum, Thursday 23rd June, 7-9pm at For Fika Sake, which is a new Swedish Cafe just off Dumbarton Road in Partick. Everyone is welcome, so come along for some delicious cake and fairly decent chat after casting your vote!

Thanks again to Kathryn for writing up the blog and for the photo evidence of the great bakes

April Fools & Easter Treats!!

The return of light evenings added a Spring like feeling to the most recent meeting of the Glasgow Baking Club, even if it didn’t feel particularly Spring like outside….The venue this time was William Bakes on Queen Margaret Drive, where owner Sandy welcomed us with open arms. Sandy has moved from his previous venture at Felix and Oscar on Great Western Road to open a new cafe, and a lovely place it is too. During the day the window of this cosy cafe is filled with tempting looking bakes for sale, and we tried to recreate this with our own attempts, although unfortunately no one offered to give us any money in exchange for them….

Before we got our hands on the window full of cakes, Sandy was kind enough to entertain us with some tales about his time treading the boards and appearing in a variety of productions including a Rob Roy epic starring Wolf from Gladiators, and the now obligatory roles for Scottish actors, River City and Taggart. He also gave us some good tips and advice for anyone brave enough to think about starting their own cafe, basically be prepared for long hours and getting a bit fed up of baking the same cakes week after week!

The theme for this event started off as April Fools, or cakes which are not as they first appear, but was expanded to include spring or Easter bakes for those of us (me included!) who did not consider themselves creative enough for the original theme….

A great selection of bakes was presented on the night, with chocolate being a common theme. You would think we would have had enough of it over the Easter weekend but obviously not judging by the fantastic anti-gravity Easter cake overflowing with mini eggs! Other delights included Easter brownies, lemon curd pavlova, salted caramel brownies, mini egg cookies and hot cross buns. I tried to offset the sugar overload by providing an asparagus, pepper and olive loaf, although I don’t think it was enough to prevent a sugar coma….On the theme of April Fools there was an ingenious creation which looked like a plate of nachos but tasted very different from what you would expect, and an interesting take on fish and chips! At least we got one of our five a day with carrot cake cookies and cupcakes, so no need to feel guilty about all that chocolate.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 11th May from 7-9pm at Patisserie Francoise on Byres Rd. The theme this time is bread and pastries, so get your Paul Hollywood hat on! There will be tea and coffee for sale and even wine, which might tempt some of you!  Always happy to welcome new members so please come along for a chat and some lovely baking.

Big thanks to Kathryn Burt for writing up our April blog and supplying the photos, I could eat my computer screen just looking at them!!.
