A couple of weeks ago, we met up for our Scottish themed event at Felix and Oscar (see their facebook page here) in the West End. The venue was lovely with a gift shop and cafe area for us to relax and catch up in. Think a handbag was purchased too!
I thoroughly enjoyed the cardamom hot chocolate I ordered and we all laid our cakes out on display in the centre.
We had a wonderful array of Scottish cakes and bakes, both sweet and savoury. After settling in, we had a quick introduction from our host for the evening, Sandy Welch followed by a talk from Melanie Andrews, our special guest. She was here to tell us about her involvement in the forthcoming TV programme, ‘Battle of the Bakes’ , Scotland’s very own version of the ‘Great British Bake Off’. The programme will showcase the best of Scotland’s homebakers and will be filmed in seven spectacular castles around Scotland. Melanie is currently accepting applications from all levels of homebakers to take part in the show. Don’t be shy, the programme encourages all levels of homebakers and encompasses all types of baking. You will have fun, face new challenges, meet some great people and learn loads! If you are interested in applying, email andrewsmelanie@sky.com to find out more information. Follow ‘Scottish Homebaking Awards’ on Facebook to keep up to date.
Melanie also told us about the‘Scottish Homebaking Awards’ system, established by her in 2009, which recognizes quality home baking all over Scotland. Anyone can nominate an establishment they think worthy of the award and one of Melanie’s team of assessors will pay a visit! Find out more at: Scottish Homebaking Awards.
The event was well attended and it was great to see many new faces and the vast array of baking on offer. It’s always nice to see the savoury as well as the sweet and it’s amazing how quickly the savoury food disappears! Someone left a cake slice behind so please email Bex if it belongs to you.
Melanie brought along her massive Dundee cake to add to the selection made by our bakers, including many new members.
We mentioned having our next event soon but with the busy summer period the only dates we can potentially meet are Wednesday the 24th July or Thursday the 15th August. To indicate your preference before we decide on the final date, please go to our doodle poll here which we will close 1 week from today; the option with the highest number of votes will be chosen.
